Jammu: Two terrorists have been reported killed in an encounter between security forces and terrorists near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district. This encounter took place in Jumagund area of the Keran sector. According to initial information, the soldiers noticed suspicious activity around 3:30 am on Saturday, after which action was initiated in the area. After the encounter, security forces intensified the search operation in the surrounding area. At present it is not clear whether the terrorists were trying to infiltrate from across the border or were already present in the area.
What happened in the early morning in Keran sector?
According to officials, alert soldiers deployed near the Line of Control noticed some suspicious activities in Jumagund area. The soldiers immediately took charge and challenged the suspects. After this firing started between the two sides. Information has come to light that two terrorists have been killed in retaliatory action by security forces.
After the incident, the soldiers cordoned off the surrounding area so that the possibility of presence of any other suspect could be ruled out. Vigilance is being maintained in the area during the search operation. Confirmation of the identity of the terrorists and detailed information related to their organisation is awaited from the authorities.
Were terrorists trying to infiltrate?
At present, there has been no official confirmation whether the encounter took place during an infiltration attempt or not. Keran sector is included in the sensitive areas of the Line of Control. Here the security forces keep a constant eye on the suspicious activities taking place from across the border.
In such cases, vigilance of soldiers is important, because timely detection of suspicious activity can help in preventing possible infiltration. However, the actual circumstances of this incident will be known only after the search operation and further information.
Why is surveillance increased on LoC before winter?
The hilly areas of the Line of Control receive heavy snowfall during winter. Due to this many passes and roads become inaccessible. In such a situation, in view of the possibility of infiltration before the snowfall starts, security forces pay special attention to monitoring and patrolling in sensitive areas. However, it would not be correct to link every encounter with an infiltration attempt. Even in this incident in Kupwara, the situation became clear only after investigation by security agencies.
Will important information be revealed?
After the killing of two terrorists, security forces are conducting a search operation in the area. During this time, aspects related to the presence of any other suspect, recovery of weapons and identification of the slain terrorists can be investigated. Other facts related to the encounter will be revealed only after detailed information is received from the authorities.
