New Delhi: The Delhi government has intensified its crackdown on food adulteration, with Food Safety Department teams seizing 948.9 litres of ghee during raids at three locations across the capital on Wednesday. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the campaign against adulterated food would continue throughout the year and would not be limited to the festive season.
The inspections were conducted on the Chief Minister’s directions as authorities stepped up efforts to ensure the quality and safety of food products sold in the city.
Where Were the Raids Conducted?
Food safety teams carried out inspections at Bhogal Market in southeast Delhi, Najafgarh Market in southwest Delhi, and Shiv Vihar in northeast Delhi.
Officials seized 389.9 litres of ghee from Bhogal and 338 litres from Najafgarh. In a joint operation with Delhi Police at Shiv Vihar, another 221 litres were confiscated. Teams also collected 15 ghee samples from the Bhogal and Najafgarh locations for testing.
Laboratory Reports to Determine Further Action
Samples of the seized ghee have been sent to laboratories to check whether the products meet prescribed food safety standards. Officials said further action would depend on the findings of the laboratory reports.
The department is continuing to monitor food quality to prevent unsafe products from reaching consumers. Authorities have warned that action will be taken against those found violating food safety regulations.
Food Safety Department to Get More Staff and Modern Technology
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the department would be equipped with modern technology and its workforce expanded to strengthen inspections. Staff may also be drawn from other departments when required.
She said the government would improve the inspection system and launch public awareness campaigns alongside enforcement measures. Gupta added that even established and branded companies would be subject to the same rules and would not receive exemptions from food safety requirements.
How Can Consumers Report Suspected Food Adulteration?
The Chief Minister urged residents to report the sale of adulterated, poor-quality or expired food products. Complaints can be made to the Food Safety Department helpline at 1800-11-3921 during office hours.
Gupta said public health and food purity remained priorities for the government, adding that the year-round campaign would seek to hold violators accountable.
