Washington: America is continuously trying to negotiate to end the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. However, meanwhile, the administration of US President Donald Trump has approved the possible sale of 500 Patriot air defence interceptor missiles to Ukraine. The estimated price of this deal is said to be 2.1 billion dollars (about Rs 18 thousand crores). The US State Department gave this information on Friday. With the help of these missiles, Ukraine will be able to strengthen its air defence to counter Russian attacks and ballistic missiles.

Why did America approve the sale of 500 Patriot missiles?

According to the US State Department, under this proposed deal, Ukraine will be given 500 Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3 MSE) interceptor missiles. Apart from this, related spare parts, logistics facilities and technical support will also be included in the package.

America will not spend its government money for this purchase. Ukraine will have to use economic support from Canada, Germany and Norway to purchase these missiles. This amount will be made available through the JUMPSTART programme. Along with this, national funds received from the European Union’s Ukraine Support Loan will also be used.

The US State Department says this sale will improve Ukraine’s integrated air and missile defense capability. This will also help in keeping the existing Patriot system continuously active.

What did Zelensky demand from America?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed this decision of America. He said that 500 Patriot missiles could prove to be very important for the security of Ukraine’s skies. However, he also expressed concern over the delay in delivery of the missiles.

According to Zelensky, it may take several years for the supply of these missiles to begin. In such a situation, he has appealed to America to find a way for immediate delivery of missiles in view of the current threat.

He said on social media platform In such a situation, Ukraine needs these missiles in the winter season. Later, the allied countries can complete their weapons stockpile through the new production process.

Why did Russia’s attacks increase Ukraine’s concern?

Zelensky alleged that Russia is continuously targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. During the winter season, such attacks can become a big challenge for the country’s electricity and other essential services.

Ukraine needs Patriot interceptors to intercept Russian ballistic missiles. Zelensky also thanked US President Donald Trump and Foreign Minister Marco Rubio for this approval.

Lockheed Martin will be the main contractor from America’s side in this deal. However, getting the approval does not mean that the delivery of missiles will start immediately. The process of procurement and supply may still take time.
