New Delhi: Security has been stepped up across Delhi amid ongoing protests by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). As part of the enhanced security measures, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced that 18 metro stations will remain closed from 7:30 am on Saturday, July 25, until further notice. However, passengers will still be able to use interchange facilities at select major metro stations where line-changing services will continue uninterrupted.
Which stations were closed?
According to DMRC, the stations where entry and exit will remain closed for the time being due to security reasons include Rajiv Chowk, Barakhamba Road, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg, Jhandewalan, Shivaji Stadium, New Delhi, Lok Kalyan Marg, Patel Chowk, Janpath, Mandi House, Central Secretariat, Seva Tirth, Supreme Court, ITO, Delhi Gate, Indraprastha, Khan Market and Jor Bagh.
At which stations will there be an interchange facility?
Giving relief to passengers, DMRC said that line change facility will continue at major interchange stations like Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House and Central Secretariat. However, entry and exit will not be allowed at these stations.
What has been the impact on passengers?
The traffic system of the capital has been affected due to the closure of metro stations and barricading on many major roads. People travelling by metro daily are now having to adopt alternative routes. Many passengers say that their journey is taking an additional time of 40 to 45 minutes.
Why did the problems of office-goers increase?
Many central ministries, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), and other government offices are located around Mandi House, Central Secretariat, ITO, and Seva Tirtha. Thousands of employees reach these areas daily by metro. Due to the closure of stations, they now have to walk or resort to other means of transport.
Do railway passengers and lawyers also face problems?
Commuters going to New Delhi Railway Station and lawyers reaching the Supreme Court are also facing problems due to traffic restrictions and changes in metro services. Many people have to travel extra time to reach the train and court on time.
Were many stations closed even a day before?
This is the second consecutive day when restrictions have been imposed on metro stations due to security reasons. Earlier on July 24, DMRC had also kept 17 metro stations closed. The effect of these restrictions, which have been in place for two consecutive days, is clearly visible on the pace of the capital.
