New Delhi: The crisis of floods and landslides in Nepal has not been completely averted yet another danger has emerged in Darchula district. The flow of Chaulani river has been affected after the landslide here. Due to huge amount of debris falling from the mountain into the river, the water path has been blocked. The administration has asked people living in the surrounding areas to remain alert.
Was the river course affected after the landslide?
The incident occurred in Bhattar area of the Apihimal rural municipality in Darchula district. A large amount of debris fell from the mountain and reached the Chaulani River, affecting the flow of the river. According to the local administration, the series of landslides in the area has not stopped completely yet. In such a situation, if more debris enters the river, there is a possibility of the water channel being completely blocked.
Why is there a danger of the river suddenly rising?
The biggest concern of the officials is about the accumulation of water in the river. If the river channel is further closed due to debris, water may accumulate there. Later, when the debris gets broken or washed away, water can suddenly rush downwards at high speed. In such a situation, the risk of flood will increase in the areas situated on the banks of the river.
How many families were evacuated to safe places?
In view of the danger of landslides, about 10 families of Bhattar Basti have been shifted to another place as a precautionary measure. These families are currently accommodated at the homes of relatives and essential items have also been provided by the local administration. Officials say that the situation in the affected area is being continuously monitored.
Why did the administration increase surveillance?
Darchula district administration has asked people living on the river banks to remain alert. Policemen are being sent to the affected area to take stock of the situation. Security personnel have also been instructed to be ready for immediate action in case of any emergency. Sudurpaschim Pradesh Chief Minister Khagraj Bhatt has also asked officials to remain on high alert and be prepared to deal with any possible disaster.

This threat posed in Darchula comes at a time when Nepal is still trying to recover from the recent devastating floods and flash floods. After the horrific disaster that occurred in the Nepal-Tibet border area on August 26, there has been massive loss of life and property in many areas and rescue operations are continuing. In such a situation, new landslides and obstruction in the flow of the river have further increased the concern of the administration.
