New Delhi: Once again a big update has come out regarding the Asia Cup trophies. BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia has said that he is confident that both the men’s and women’s Asia Cup trophies will eventually come to India. However, he clarified that at present there is no fixed deadline for the return of the trophies.
According to Saikia, both the trophies will be brought to the BCCI headquarters located at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Currently, both the trophies are kept at the headquarters of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) in Dubai.
When will both the Asia Cup trophies come to India?
While talking to the media, Devjit Saikia said that he is hopeful that both the Asia Cup trophies will definitely reach India one day. However, he refused to give any specific date for the return of the trophies.
He said that he cannot tell the deadline but is confident that both the trophies will definitely reach the BCCI headquarters located at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Why are the trophies kept in Dubai?
Last year, after the Indian men’s team won the Asia Cup, there was a controversy regarding the trophy presentation. The Indian team had refused to accept the trophy from ACC President Mohsin Naqvi. At that time, Naqvi was the Chairman of Pakistan Cricket Board and also the Home Minister of Pakistan.
After this, instead of going to the Indian team, the trophy remained at the ACC headquarters in Dubai.
Why was the trophy not received even after the Women’s Asia Cup?
Recently, the Indian women’s team also won the Women’s T20 Asia Cup title but did not take part in the official trophy presentation. Mohsin Naqvi was present in that function.
After this, the Indian women’s team organised a small medal ceremony separately. During this, BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia and Vice President Rajeev Shukla gave the fielding medal to Indian player Nandini Sharma.
In this way, Indian teams currently do not have the trophies of both men’s and women’s Asia Cup.
Will questions be raised regarding trophy presentation in the Asian Games also?
Now the eye is also on the 2026 Asian Games. Cricket has also been included in the Asian Games to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. The Indian men’s and women’s cricket teams will also take part in the competition.
Since the cricket competition is under the supervision of ACC, there is also discussion about a presentation ceremony in case the Indian teams win medals. However, it is not yet clear what role ACC officials will play in any potential ceremony.
How long will Mohsin Naqvi remain ACC President?
Mohsin Naqvi’s tenure as current ACC president is till April 2027. After this, whether he will continue in this post or not will depend on the decision of the member countries of ACC.
At present, it has been made clear by BCCI that both the men’s and women’s Asia Cup trophies will be brought to India, but the official information about when and under what process has not been revealed yet.
Currently, both the trophies are at the ACC headquarters in Dubai and BCCI hopes to bring them to its headquarters in Mumbai in the coming time.
