New Delhi: Political developments are constantly changing before the Rejinagar assembly by-election of West Bengal. AJUP chief Humayun Kabir on Sunday announced that he will not campaign for his son and party candidate Ghulam Nabi Azad. Kabir blamed the alleged “enmity” of the administration and action against party workers behind this. A few hours later, he also said that his son would stay away from election campaigning.
Voting for Rejinagar seat is to be held on October 6 and counting of votes will take place on October 9. This by-election has become necessary after Kabir left the seat. In the 2026 assembly elections, he had won both Rejinagar and Navda seats but later resigned from Rejinagar while keeping the Navda seat with him.
Why did Humayun Kabir stay away from publicity?
Kabir alleged that people coming in contact with him were being arrested or threatened. He claimed that around 25 workers of his party have been arrested. He says that now he will convey his message to the voters through social media and will enter the field on the day of voting itself. These allegations are from Kabir and all these claims have not been independently verified.
Kabir also accused the police and administration of bias. He said that if the administration have so much desire to join politics then they should leave their uniform and join politics. These statements of his have further heated up the political atmosphere before the by-elections.
Did son Ghulam Nabi Azad also stay away from campaigning?
Hours after Humayun Kabir’s decision, his son and AJUP candidate Ghulam Nabi Azad also said that he would stay away from the election campaign. AJUP has fielded Azad from Rezinagar seat. He had filed his nomination for the by-election on September 9.
Why was there a ruckus in Rejinagar earlier also?
A day before Humayun Kabir’s statement, another major development had taken place in the Rezinagar by-election. Rabiul Alam Choudhary, the candidate of the Mamata Banerjee-led faction, first announced his withdrawal from the election but changed his decision a few hours later. He said that he will remain in the election field.
According to reports, Choudhary had initially cited identity problem among voters and alleged pressure on workers over the party’s new name and election symbol. Later, after talking to Mamata Banerjee, he retained his decision to contest the elections.
Will the contest be more interesting on October 6?
The contest in the Rejinagar by-election is multi-cornered with different parties and candidates in the fray. Ghulam Nabi Azad is contesting from AJUP, while Mamata Banerjee’s faction has fielded Rabiul Alam Chaudhary. BJP has also fielded Shakhrao Sarkar from this seat.
At present, everyone’s eyes are on the political activities of Rejinagar by-election after the decision of Humayun Kabir and his son to stay away from campaigning. At the same time, the reactions of the concerned officials regarding the allegations levelled against the administration and police are awaited.
