New Delhi: The preferences of SUV buyers in India are constantly changing. Some want a powerful vehicle at a low price, while others prefer an SUV with better features and a stylish design. This is why companies are busy introducing new models and updating their vehicles in this segment. Sales figures for the first half of FY2027, i.e. from April to September 2026, have been released.
These figures show the dominance of Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki vehicles. Most notably, the Tata Punch has secured the first position in terms of sales, while the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, once a top-5 SUV, has slipped to sixth place this time.
Tata Punch became the number-1 SUV in the country
The Tata Punch tops the list of top-5 SUVs . A total of 123,287 units were sold between April and September 2026. During the same period last year, the company sold 73,455 units. This represents a 67.84% year-on-year increase in Punch sales. Its low price, SUV-like appearance, and city driving capabilities make it popular with customers. Sales figures indicate that demand for small SUVs remains strong.
Tata Nexon was at second place
Tata Motors’ second SUV, the Nexon, also failed to lag behind in the sales race. It sold 111,919 units in the first half of FY2027, securing second place. During the same period last year, it sold 89,574 units, marking a 24.97% year-on-year increase in sales. The placement of both the Punch and Nexon in the top 2 is a significant achievement for Tata Motors. This demonstrates the strong response to the company’s SUVs across a wide range of price and demand segments.
Maruti Suzuki Fronx also showed its strength
The Maruti Suzuki Fronx secured the third position with sales of 110,135 units. Sales increased by 43.40% compared to the first half of last year. The Fronx appeals to customers who want SUV-like looks but also want a vehicle that is easy to use for everyday driving.
Mahindra Scorpio maintains strong hold
The Mahindra Scorpio range, which includes the Scorpio-N and Scorpio Classic, recorded total sales of 93,488 units, a growth of 10.46% over the previous year. The Scorpio continues to hold a strong position among Mahindra’s best-selling vehicles. Its rugged identity and SUV-like stance continue to attract customers.
Hyundai Creta in top 5, but sales decline
The Hyundai Creta remained in fifth place with sales of 89,727 units. However, its sales did not increase like the other top-5 models. During the same period last year, the Creta sold 99,345 units. This year, sales declined by 9.68%.
Why did Brezza fall out of the top 5?
The most surprising change in this list is the ranking of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza. This SUV has slipped to sixth place. A key reason for this is the launch of the updated model in June. The model update impacted production and wholesale sales figures, resulting in a slight decline in sales during this period.
