New Delhi: A developing weather system over the Bay of Bengal could intensify into a powerful cyclonic storm in the coming days, raising concerns for coastal Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha. According to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) national bulletin issued at 8:30 am on October 25, 2026, the system could strengthen further and potentially develop into an extremely severe cyclonic storm.
The weather system was reported to be nearly stationary over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal. Its centre was located approximately 440 kilometres north-northwest of Vijayapuram and around 880 kilometres east-southeast of Visakhapatnam.
Storm Expected to Intensify From October 26
According to the forecast, the system could intensify into a deep depression on October 25 before moving west-northwestwards. It is expected to develop into a cyclonic storm by the morning of October 26 and could strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by October 27.
Further intensification is possible after that, with meteorologists warning that the system could gain considerable strength before approaching the coastline.
When Could the Cyclone Reach the Andhra Pradesh Coast?
The IMD forecast suggests that the system could approach the Andhra Pradesh coast as an extremely severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28. It may cross the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, affecting the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coastal region.
At the time of landfall, sustained wind speeds could reach 115–125 kilometres per hour, with gusts potentially rising to 140 kilometres per hour. Such conditions could pose significant risks to coastal communities and infrastructure.
Orange Alert and Precautionary Measures
With the system expected to intensify, residents of vulnerable coastal areas should closely monitor official weather bulletins and advisories issued by local authorities. Fishermen should follow restrictions and warnings concerning sea conditions and avoid venturing into the sea when advised.
Residents should also remain prepared to follow evacuation instructions and move to safer locations if directed by the administration.
As the forecast develops, timely precautions and adherence to official advisories will be crucial to reducing risks to life and property.
