Step into the Future: Moscow Launches Its First AI-Powered Passenger Tram

Moscow has introduced Russia’s first passenger-carrying autonomous tram, marking a major step in the country’s public transport development. The announcement was made on the official website of the Moscow government, highlighting the city’s progress in transport innovation. The tram is part of Moscow’s long-term transport strategy aiming for 2030. The plan is to equip over 300 trams with self-driving technology, so that by 2035, these autonomous trams make up nearly 90 percent of the city’s entire tram fleet.

Advanced Features and Safety

According to TV BRICS, the new tram can stop on its own, open and close doors, follow traffic lights, give way to pedestrians, and automatically change tracks, all while keeping to its schedule. Since May 2024, it has completed more than 8,000 kilometres of tests without any traffic violations, showing its safety and reliability.

Role of Operators

Current federal rules require an operator to be present in the tram to supervise the system and manage tasks like checking tickets. However, the actual driving is completely handled by AI and sophisticated software developed in Moscow.

Phased Testing and Expansion Plans

The tram went through three trial stages. First, it ran at night without passengers. Then, it operated with passengers under supervision. Finally, it entered full autonomous service. By the end of 2025, three autonomous trams will run regularly, with plans to increase the number to 15 by 2026.

Future of Autonomous Transport in Moscow

In addition to trams, the city plans to test its first autonomous metro train in December 2025, with full passenger service expected by 2026. This effort shows Moscow’s commitment to modern, eco-friendly urban transport, improving passenger experience, reducing emissions, and making traffic flow more efficiently.
