Two held in illegal mobile IMEI tampering racket in Mumbai’s Powai

Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Friday arrested two men from the Powai area of the western suburbs for allegedly changing mobile phone IMEI numbers. The two men arrested by Unit 6 of the Mumbai Crime Branch are Ramprasad Sargun Rajbhar (37) and Gulam Rasool Rashid Khan. Khan runs a mobile shop in Powai and also works as a mobile technician, an official said.

How the racket was exposed

According to sources, police received a tip-off and raided the shop. They found the accused were using an “App Unlock Tool” through Google Chrome to change the IMEI numbers of mobile phones. During questioning, officials confirmed the two were involved in illegal IMEI number tampering of mobile phones, the officer added.

Legal action and investigation

The men were charged under the relevant sections of the BNS. After medical tests, they were produced before a Mumbai court. “We have seized property including fake and suspicious second-hand mobile phones,” said a crime branch officer. The raid was carried out under the direction of Police Inspector Bharat Ghone of Unit 6 of the Crime Branch in the Chembur area of Mumbai. Police Inspector Sushant Sawant’s team is now carrying out further investigation.
