Sports News: The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Tuesday, August 13, formally approved India’s bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The decision was taken at a Special General Meeting (SGM) held in New Delhi. India has already submitted an expression of interest for the event and has endorsed Ahmedabad as the host city. The last date for submitting official bid documents for the hosting rights is August 31. Meanwhile, India’s chances have become stronger after Canada withdrew from the race.
Inspection of sports venues
Recently, Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) officials, led by Director Darren Hall, visited Ahmedabad and inspected the sports venues. They also met representatives of the Gujarat government. It is expected that a large delegation will visit Ahmedabad again at the end of this month, as the deadline for submitting documents is near.
India has previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010. The event at that time proved to be an important experience in terms of infrastructure and sports management. This time, if India gets the right to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, it will be a big and positive step towards hosting the 2036 Olympic Games.
The Commonwealth Games Federation’s general assembly will meet in Glasgow in November 2025, where the final decision on the host country will be taken. The plan to make Ahmedabad the host city emphasizes state-of-the-art sports complexes, a better traffic system, and infrastructure on par with international standards.
India secured second place in the 2010 Delhi Games
In the 2010 Delhi Games, India had won a total of 101 medals in its best-ever performance. 38 gold, 27 silver, and 36 bronze. It also secured second place in the medal tally. At that time Australia stood first with 74 gold, 55 silver, and 48 bronze, while England stood third with 37 gold medals.
If India wins the 2030 edition, it will not only be a global showcase of the country’s sporting prowess but will also strengthen India’s position as a host of international sporting events. It will also contribute significantly to the development of the local economy, tourism, and sports infrastructure.
