Five people have died and about 20 others became sick after a community feast in Dungri, a forest village in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district that has no road or mobile connection, officials said on Friday. The incident took place over a week ago, and it was reported only on Tuesday, seven days after the event. Following the report, medical teams were sent to Dungri village across the Indravati River.
Medical Help Reaches the Village
According to Narayanpur’s Chief Medical and Health Officer, five people, including two women aged 45 and 60, lost their lives between October 14 and 20. Around 20 others showed symptoms like fever, vomiting, and weakness after eating at the community meal. Health teams examined 25 villagers, treated those with minor symptoms on site, and referred the serious patients to nearby health centres for further care.
Officials Suspect Contaminated Food or Water
District Collector Pratishtha Mamgain said the administration acted quickly once the news reached them. “Dungri is across the Indravati River and very hard to reach, with no mobile or road connectivity. We got the information on October 21 and immediately sent teams from Narayanpur and Bhairamgarh. The situation is now under control,” she said. Officials believe the sickness may have been caused by contaminated food or water. The health department has started an awareness drive, distributed medicines, clean drinking water, and hygiene kits. The administration is still keeping a close watch on the area.
