CG News: Woman from Bihar Dies by Suicide After Alleged Dowry Harassment in In-Laws’ House

In Karpawand area of Jagdalpur district, a woman named Srishti alias Priya Gupta from Rohtas district in Bihar ended her life by jumping from the terrace. She allegedly took this extreme step after being constantly harassed and beaten by her husband’s family over dowry demands. Before her death, Priya wrote a suicide note on paper, took a photo of it, and sent it to her father through WhatsApp. The police have begun investigating the matter.

What was the background of the woman’s marriage?

According to reports, Srishti was married to Satyendra Gupta of Karpawand around 11 years ago. She was the mother of two young children — an 11-year-old daughter and a 5-year-old son. Since her marriage, she was allegedly tortured by her husband, brother-in-law Santosh Gupta, father-in-law Jagarnath Gupta, and mother-in-law for dowry. They would frequently pressure her to bring money and household items from her parents’ home. She was often taunted and beaten over these demands.

What happened on the day of the incident?

On the morning of the incident, Srishti’s mother-in-law and brother-in-law reportedly got angry because she delayed cleaning the shop. They allegedly stripped and beat her in anger. Unable to bear the humiliation and torture, Srishti went to the terrace and jumped to her death. Before taking this step, she wrote a letter, took a photo of it, and sent it to her father, Vinod Prasad Gupta. She died on the spot. Her family members accused the in-laws and the local police of trying to settle the matter through money instead of taking action. They are now demanding justice for their daughter.

What did she write in her final message?

Before ending her life, Srishti sent a heartbreaking message to her father through WhatsApp. In the handwritten note, she wrote, “Papa, they beat me every day for dowry… my children are kept away from me… I don’t want to live anymore.” She also mentioned that she was not allowed to visit a doctor even when she was unwell. In her letter, she described being dragged, beaten, and humiliated on the morning of October 15.

What is the police’s response to the case?

Basanta Kumar, the officer in charge of Karpawand police station, said that a case of marg (unnatural death) has been registered and an investigation is underway. He added that it is too early to confirm whether dowry harassment was the cause of the suicide. The police have received the woman’s suicide note through WhatsApp. The officer also stated that while the woman’s family members visited the station, they have not yet filed a written complaint.
