Punjab to become ‘Global Hub’ of Hockey: Holland’s legendary player Bovelander accepts CM Mann’s invitation

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann today met renowned Dutch hockey player Floris Jan Bovelander and offered to avail his expertise to further strengthen hockey in Punjab, especially in preparation for the prestigious Asian Champions Trophy. During the detailed meeting, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann discussed the broader environment of hockey and sports in Punjab, emphasizing the government’s commitment to restore the national game to its former glory. He lauded Floris Jan Bovelander’s extraordinary skills and immense contribution to hockey. He said that Floris’s illustrious career inspires young players across the world.

Inviting the Olympian bowler to Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that Punjab is keen on Floris training Punjabi athletes to further hone the skills of Punjabi players. He said, “Punjab is committed to nurturing sports talent and taking hockey to new heights. It is a matter of great pride that for the first time in its history, Punjab will host the Hockey Asian Champions Trophy, which is a major milestone for the sports environment of the state.”

Explaining the importance of the upcoming international competitions, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that the Asian Games will conclude in early October, after which the top six teams will participate in the Champions Trophy. He further said that the approval of this four-nation tournament will further strengthen Punjab’s position as a hockey hub on the global stage. He said, “Despite the strong presence of Punjabis in Indian hockey for decades, Punjab has never hosted any major international hockey tournament till now. Now this is a historic change.”

Reiterating the deep connection between Punjab and hockey, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that it is an unbreakable bond. He said, “It is impossible to imagine Indian hockey without Punjabi players. More than 50 players from Punjab have won Olympic medals and 10 Punjabi players have captained India in the Olympics.”

Emphasizing on the rich heritage of Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said that villages like Sansarpur, Khusropur and Mithapur have together produced more than 20 Olympians. He further highlighted the recent achievements and said that India’s bronze medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics came after a gap of 41 years, in which the team led by Manpreet Singh included nine Punjabi players. He further said, “India also won another bronze medal in the Paris 2024 Olympics, which included 10 Punjabi players, where Harmanpreet Singh led the team as captain and emerged as the highest scorer.”

Sharing some excerpts from the meeting on his X platform, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann said, “It was a great pleasure to meet Olympian Floris Jan Bovelander in the Netherlands, who is known for his extraordinary skills and contribution to the game. His illustrious career and experience will inspire our young players immensely. Floris was invited to come to Punjab, which he gladly accepted. He is committed to connecting with and motivating our players ahead of the upcoming Asian Hockey Championship. Punjab is determined to nurture sports talent and take hockey to new heights.”
