New Delhi: After petrol and milk, now it is the turn of medicines. It is reported that the central government is thinking of increasing the prices of 384 essential and life-saving medicines for some time. The proposal has reached the government. As soon as the approval is given, the prices will increase.
Which medicines will be expensive?
If sources are to be believed, this list includes antibiotics, heart medicines, pain relievers and vitamins. Prices of daily used medicines like amoxicillin, azithromycin, paracetamol, atorvastatin and dexamethasone may increase. These are the same medicines that are most effective in fever, infection, cholesterol and pain.
What is the reason being given for increasing the price?
Pharmaceutical companies say that due to tension in West Asia, the raw materials of medicines have become expensive by 200 to 300 percent. The chemical which was earlier costing Rs 100, is now costing Rs 300. Apart from this, the cost of packing and transportation has also increased tremendously. Companies are saying that it is becoming difficult to make medicines at the old rates.
Will this increase be forever?
The government does not want to keep it permanent. According to the report, as soon as the situation improves in the international market and the supply chain improves, the prices of medicines will be reduced. Currently, talks are going on between the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), the Department of Pharmaceuticals and the Ministry of Commerce.
Are petrol and diesel also being affected?
Recently the prices of petrol and diesel have increased twice. The government says that the economy is under pressure due to energy crisis and rising import bill. A large part of India’s LPG supply comes through the Strait of Hormuz. There is constant tension there. It is affecting everything.
What effect will it have on the common man?
It will have a direct impact on your pocket. From fever pills to heart medicine, everything will become expensive. The monthly budget of those households who have BP, sugar or heart patients may get spoiled. Even though the government is saying that the increase is temporary, there does not seem to be any relief at the moment. Now everyone’s eyes are on the next decision of the government. If prices increase, the problems of the common man will increase further.
