Iran Raises Stakes, Says Conditions Must Be Met Before Dialogue With US

Tehran: Amidst the ongoing tension in West Asia, Iran has once again adopted a tough stance towards America. Iran has clearly said that if the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries are not followed, then it is ready to face any situation. After this statement, new discussions have started regarding the increasing tension in the area.

What did the Iranian Parliament Speaker say?

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of the Iranian parliament and chief negotiator, said in a television interview that talks on a final agreement would move forward only if the US meets pre-arranged commitments. He said that if the other side does not respect the agreement, Iran is ready to face a war-like situation.

What accusations did Iran make against America?

Ghalibaf accused the US of violating the agreement that ended the recent conflict. He said that recent activities in the Persian Gulf are an indication that the terms of the agreement have not been fully followed. Iran says that trust will be restored only when America fulfils its promises.

What are the 14 points of MoU?

According to Iran, the current talks are not focused on any new political agreement but on implementing the 14 points of the MoU. Ghalibaf claimed that the lifting of the naval blockade under this agreement was a major achievement for Iran, after which the country has exported more than 40 million barrels of oil.

Did Iran take a strict stance on Strait of Hormuz?

The Iranian leadership has also made its stance clear regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Ghalibaf said that Iran and Oman have rights over this strategic sea route. He says that after completion of the 60 day period of the MOU, toll will be collected from the ships passing through here.

Will technical-level talks continue in Doha?

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Bagai said that at present there are no plans for any high-level meeting with American officials. He said that only technical-level talks are going on in Qatar’s capital Doha, in which issues like implementation of the MoU and release of Iran’s frozen assets are being discussed. Qatar has also confirmed that technical talks are ongoing between the two countries, but no new meeting at the political level has been scheduled.
