New Delhi: The continuous torrential rains for the last 4 days have stopped the pace of Mumbai. In many areas of the city, the roads are filled with knee-deep water. It has become difficult to leave the house. Daily life is disrupted due to waterlogging in low-lying areas. Office workers are also facing the most problems. The Meteorological Department has predicted further heavy rains and has asked people to remain alert.
What is the condition of train and flight services?
The rains hit transport the most. Many long-distance trains were delayed due to waterlogging on railway tracks. Some had to be stopped midway. There was problem at the airport also. Due to bad weather, the route of some flights had to be changed. Passengers remained stranded at the airport for hours and the travel plans of many people got spoilt.
Why did accidents amid rain increase the concern?
Due to continuous rain, bad news is coming from different places. A building collapsed in Mankhurd, Mumbai, killing several people. A landslide occurred in Pune district. In some places walls collapsed and people were swept away in the strong current. Many people have lost their lives and many are injured in these accidents.
What steps has the administration taken?
In view of the situation, relief and rescue work has been intensified. NDRF and SDRF teams are deployed in sensitive areas. Mumbai’s schools, colleges and some government offices have been temporarily closed for security. CM Devendra Fadnavis has appealed to the people not to leave the house without essential work and follow the government guidelines. Private companies have also been asked to allow their employees to work from home.
What is the biggest challenge ahead?
According to the Meteorological Department, rain may continue for the next few days. In such a situation, people living in low-lying areas will have to take special care. The administration is continuously monitoring the situation. If needed, more relief teams will also be sent.
At present, the only prayer of the people of Mumbai and surrounding areas is that the rains stop soon and everything comes back on track.
