Shopian: A key Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) commander on Wednesday has been killed in the encounter between security forces and terrorists in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. The top LeT commander, who is identified as Zakir Ganai, was one of the two terrorists who were first spotted by surveillance cameras on July 3 in a dense orchard in the area.

Where did the encounter happen?

Security forces in Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir, achieved a major success. After a four-day, security forces killed Lashkar-e-Taiba’s top commander, Zakir Ganai, on Wednesday.

Taking to X, Jammu and Kashmir Police shared a post on X, stating that “You Can Run But You Can’t Hide”. The police have also recovered the terrorist’s body.

“You Can Run But You Can’t Hide! One Lashkar terrorist neutralised by SOG Shopian, in a Jt Op, along with RR and CRPF,” Jammu and Kashmir Police wrote on X.

Security forces had been searching for this terrorist for several days, but he was eluding capture due to his frequent location changes. However, he was cornered in Shopian and killed in an encounter.

Who was involved in the Shopian operation?

The Jammu and Kashmir Police is continuously engaged in action against terrorists. In this operation, the National Rifles and CRPF personnel were involved. Security forces have also recovered the terrorist’s body.

The counter-terrorism operation was launched four days ago following credible intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the area. At the time of this report, the operation was ongoing. The identity of the killed terrorist and other details of the operation were awaited.

According to officials, the two terrorists were first spotted on July 3 by surveillance cameras in a dense orchard in the seven-village Meemandar area. A joint team of the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and several companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has tightened its cordon around the area. Officials said the terrorists trapped in the cordon have been identified as Latif and Zakir. They reportedly opened fire when the Army personnel approached them, leading to a gunfight.
