Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has launched a new program to improve the lives of the Tharu tribe. The government is working to help forest dwellers and special tribes become socially and financially independent.
Formation of Tharu Self-Help Groups
As part of this effort, 371 Tharu self-help groups have been created in three districts of the state. These groups aim to increase income opportunities and support self-reliant livelihoods. To help these groups, the state government has introduced a special financial scheme. Each group has received a revolving fund of Rs 30,000 and a community investment fund (CIF) of Rs 1.5 lakh. With this support, the groups can start small businesses, earn income, and become self-sufficient.
Tharu Handicraft Company Established
A Tharu Handicraft Company has also been set up in Palia block of Lakhimpur Kheri to promote the community’s traditional art. This initiative is supported by the Forest and Development Related Value Chain (FDRVC). The company will bring together Tharu artisans, help them access better markets, and promote their products nationally and internationally. The government recognizes the rich heritage of the Tharu community in natural resources and handicrafts. The aim is to use their highly demanded art to create long-term economic benefits for the tribe.
Boosting Employment and Income
Previously, the community lacked organization, which made it difficult for them to earn fair value for their products. With the new initiative, local artisans will have more job opportunities and higher income. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said, “Our goal is to bring all sections of society into the mainstream. Forest dwellers, underprivileged people, and special tribes should become self-reliant through education, healthcare, jobs, and sustainable livelihoods. The programs for the Tharu tribe are part of this plan and will serve as an example. Similar efforts will be extended to other tribal and forest communities across the state.”
