New Delhi: Amid the ongoing tussle over government formation after Israel’s elections, new news has emerged from Tel Aviv. According to the report, Israel’s Arab parties are ready to offer outside support to Gadi Eisenkot. However, they have set a condition for this: the removal of Knesset (Israeli Parliament) Speaker Amir Ohana from his post. If Eizenkot agrees to this, government formation efforts can begin.
According to Haaretz , the two Arab parties are in the first attempt to remove Benjamin Netanyahu from the post of Prime Minister. Leaders of both parties held a meeting on Monday (November 2). A senior leader of the Arab party RA’AM said, “We are ready to provide outside support. Efforts are underway to form a government. Our leaders may soon meet with the president to discuss this.”
Demand for removal of Speaker Amir Ohana
The Arab party Joint List issued a statement on Monday saying, “We have begun the process of forming a government. We demand that the leaders of the Change Bloc remove the speaker first. This will be the first step towards forming a government.” Meanwhile, a statement issued by the Arab coalition RA’AM said that a Change Bloc government is being formed in Israel. The two Arab parties have a total of 19 members. If they join forces with Eizenkot, the number will increase to 67. In Israel, 61 members are needed to form a government. Netanyahu’s coalition currently has 53 members.
The exercise to form the government will begin from Wednesday
According to the Times of Israel, Israeli President Herzog will hold talks with all parties one by one starting Wednesday. Herzog may then invite a leader to form a government. “We need to avoid an election,” Herzog said in a statement. Herzog’s first attempt will be to choose a leader based on a majority vote. If no party can secure a majority, the House will eventually be dissolved. If this happens, Netanyahu could remain as caretaker Prime Minister until the next election.
