New Delhi: Delhi Police’s Central District has arrested two men accused of defrauding bank officials through impersonation, forged emails and fraudulent payment instructions. Police claim to have recovered assets worth approximately ₹2.5 crore, including around 1,500 grams of gold, 101 gold coins, jewellery, a new Mahindra Thar Roxx and ₹2.37 lakh in cash.

One of the arrested men was reportedly a proclaimed offender who had been absconding for more than seven years in a counterfeit currency case. Investigators are examining the recovered assets and their possible links to other alleged financial frauds.

A Fake Email Led to a ₹22.56 Lakh Transfer

Addressing a press conference at Delhi Police Headquarters, Central District DCP Rohit Rajbir Singh said the operation was conducted under the supervision of Additional DCP Prashant Chaudhary.

The case concerns a transaction involving the Rajendra Place branch of Bank of India. According to police, on August 5, 2026, an individual contacted a bank official over the phone and introduced himself as Deepak Malhotra, a director of a corporate company.

The caller initially discussed opening a fixed deposit worth ₹1 crore and negotiated interest rates to gain the bank officials’ confidence. He subsequently claimed that the company’s cheque book had been exhausted and requested a payment through email.

Investigators allege that the accused used an email address resembling the company’s official address and a forged letterhead to instruct the bank to transfer ₹22,56,922 to another account. When the bank sought the required documentation, the caller allegedly pressured officials to release the money quickly.

The payment was subsequently transferred through the Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) system. A case was registered at the Central District Cyber Police Station.

Technical Investigation Leads to Two Arrests

During the investigation, police traced the transferred funds to a bank account in West Bengal that was allegedly being used to receive money obtained through fraud.

The use of false identities, mobile numbers and misleading email addresses initially complicated the investigation. Police analysed telecommunications records, digital evidence and other technical information to identify the suspects.

The investigation led to the arrest of Vinay Kumar Yadav, 36, from Loni in Ghaziabad, and Anil Kumar Sehgal, 65, a resident of Noida.

Police are now examining the alleged financial network and tracing the source of the assets recovered during the operation.

Six More Cases Linked to Similar Modus Operandi

According to investigators, the probe has revealed possible links to six other cases registered in Gurugram, Palwal, South-East Delhi and Rohini.

Police said these cases involved similar methods of financial fraud, with allegations involving losses running into crores of rupees. Investigators also identified an alleged attempt to commit fraud involving ₹88 lakh in one of the cases.

The police have reportedly obtained leads about other possible associates operating in West Bengal and Bihar.

Investigators suspect that the accused purchased gold and withdrew cash using money allegedly obtained through fraudulent transactions. Further examination is underway to establish the connection between the recovered assets and the cases under investigation.

Police Issue Fraud Prevention Advisory for Banks and Companies

Delhi Police has advised banks and companies to independently verify major payment requests before processing them. Officials should contact authorised signatories using mobile numbers already registered in bank records rather than relying on contact details supplied in an email or telephone call.

Businesses have also been urged not to bypass mandatory documentation or verification procedures under pressure, even when a caller claims to be a senior company official.

Anyone suspecting cyber financial fraud can report it through helpline 1930 or the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at www.cybercrime.gov.in.

Police Team Behind the Operation

The investigation team included Sub-Inspector Kamlesh Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspector Pankaj Yadav, Head Constables Manvir Singh and Shamim, Constable Nitin, Woman Head Constable Sunita and Woman Constable Lalita.

The team worked under the supervision of Cyber Police Station SHO Yograj Dalal, with overall oversight from Paharganj ACP Saurabh A. Narendra. DCP Rohit Rajbir Singh said technical analysis and coordinated police action helped investigators identify and apprehend the suspects.

Further investigation is continuing to establish the source of the recovered assets and identify other individuals who may have been involved.
