New Delhi: Fasting is highly beneficial for health. Many people today adopt intermittent fasting, or one meal a day, to combat muscle loss. This type of fasting can yield positive results, but it’s not for everyone. Nowadays, most people, young or old, are suffering from various health problems. People are developing lifestyle-related problems like diabetes and high blood pressure at a very young age. In such a situation, fasting can prove dangerous.

What are the warning signs?

1) Blood Glucose

If you fast, your blood glucose levels may fluctuate slightly. But if you’re experiencing symptoms of low or high blood sugar, you need to check if your blood sugar level is below 70 or above 300. The Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia recommends breaking your fast. Experts say it’s time to go to the hospital.

Symptoms of low blood sugar include shaking, sweating, dizziness, confusion, weakness, blurred vision, fainting, and extreme hunger.

Symptoms of high blood sugar include excessive thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, fatigue, bad breath, dry mouth, difficulty breathing, stomach pain, and unexplained weight loss.

2) Dehydration

If you feel dizzy upon waking up in the morning, it means you’re dehydrated. In this case, you should pay attention to your urine level and color. If your urine is too dark and the amount is low, it could mean you’re not drinking enough water. If you also experience dizziness, it’s a sign you should immediately go to the hospital, and you may need to take regular oral rehydration (ORS).

3) Rapid Heart Rate

If your heart starts beating faster and your legs swell, it could mean your kidneys and heart aren’t able to handle the pressure of fasting. Therefore, consult a doctor immediately.
