Independence Day 2025: 15th August holds a special significance for every Indian. This is the day when India got independence from the British. However, this day is also special for cricket lovers because there is only one player from India who has scored a century while playing for Team India on this day. The names of players like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, and Rohit Sharma are not included in this list.

If we look at the list of batsmen who scored a century for India on Independence Day, only one Indian’s name comes up. Actually, legendary batsman Virat Kohli scored a century for Team India on the occasion of Independence Day. Apart from Kohli, no other batsman has done this.

Virat Kohli’s historic century

15 August also became a special day on the cricket field when Virat Kohli made a unique record during the West Indies tour in 2019. This incident happened during the third and final ODI match in Port of Spain. The match started on 14 August, but play was halted due to rain, and the second innings started in the early hours of 15 August as per Indian time.

Kohli made this occasion memorable. He scored an unbeaten 114 runs in just 99 balls with the help of 14 fours. With this, Kohli became the first and only Indian player to score a century for India on 15 August. Apart from Virat, no other player has achieved this feat till now.

Thrill of the match

West Indies won the toss and batted first and scored 240/7 in 35 overs. Chris Gayle played a blistering innings of 72 runs in 41 balls, while Khalil Ahmed took 3 wickets for India. Due to rain, India got a revised target of 255 runs in 35 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis rule. Thanks to Kohli’s century and Shreyas Iyer’s brilliant innings of 65 runs, India achieved this target easily. The team won the match by 6 wickets and with 15 balls remaining.
