New Delhi:  The new government led by Nitish Kumar has been sworn in in Bihar. Along with Nitish Kumar, 26 other leaders also took oath as ministers. Following the swearing-in ceremony, it has been revealed how many parts of the country are currently under the power of the Bharatiya Janata Party or its NDA allies.

Interestingly, not only in Bihar, but in many major states across the country, the BJP or NDA has maintained a strong position for many years. In some states, the party has been in power for more than twenty or twenty-five years, while in Gujarat, the BJP has ruled for thirty consecutive years, a unique record in Indian politics.

Gujarat: Continuous BJP government since 1995

Gujarat is considered the BJP’s strongest stronghold. Since Keshubhai Patel came to power in 1995, the BJP has maintained its dominance. Between 1995 and 1998, the state experienced leadership changes. Keshubhai Patel, Suresh Mehta, Shankar Singh Vaghela, and Dilip Parikh became Chief Ministers.

The BJP returned to power in 1998, and Narendra Modi assumed the Chief Ministership in 2001. Modi remained Gujarat’s longest-serving Chief Minister until 2014. After 2014, Anandiben Patel, Vijay Rupani, and now Bhupendra Patel have led the state. In the 2022 assembly elections, the BJP further consolidated its hold by winning a record 156 seats.

Madhya Pradesh: BJP’s influence for over 20 years

Madhya Pradesh has also long been a stronghold of the BJP. The BJP has been in power almost all the time since 2003. In between, the Congress came to power for only 15 months (2018–2020), but the government soon fell, and the BJP returned. This period saw a long tenure under Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and the current government is led by Mohan Yadav.

Haryana: Continuous BJP government since 2014

In 2014, the BJP formed a full majority government in Haryana for the first time. First, Manohar Lal Khattar served two terms, and now Nayab Singh Saini has become the Chief Minister. The BJP has returned to power for the third consecutive time in the state. This marks a significant milestone in Haryana politics.

Uttar Pradesh: Strong BJP rule since 2017

The BJP won a landslide victory in the 2017 assembly elections, ousting the Samajwadi Party from power. Since then, Yogi Adityanath has served as Chief Minister, and the party’s popularity has remained strong in the state.

BJP’s nationwide political influence

The current political situation in India shows that the BJP and the NDA alliance are in power in most states. 30 years of continuous rule in Gujarat, two decades of dominance in Madhya Pradesh, and consecutive victories in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh all indicate the BJP’s organizational strength and support base. It will be interesting to see how far this influence extends in the upcoming elections and in which states the opposition manages to make a comeback.
