Tehran: The action seems to be becoming more strict amid the voices being raised against the government in Iran. Three youths were hanged in Qum Central Prison on Thursday morning. Among them was 19 year old wrestler Saleh Mohammadi, who was considered a rising face in the sports world. The government media reported this officially, but at the same time questions have also been raised on this entire matter.

Who were these three?

Apart from Saleh Mohammadi, Mehdi Ghasemi and Saeed Davoodi were among those hanged. It was told that all three were residents of Qum. Saleh’s identity was also special because he had played wrestling at the national level and had participated in some international matches.

What were the charges against them?

According to Iranian officials, two policemen were killed during demonstrations in Qum on 8 January 2026. All three were made accused in this case. They were charged with serious charges of “Moharebeh”, i.e. war against the state, the punishment for which could go straight to death.

Is this matter directly related to the demonstrations?

Yes, the entire incident is related to the same period when anger over the economic situation had come out on the streets across the country. The demonstrations, which started in late December, intensified in January. There were clashes at many places, arrests were made and the atmosphere remained continuously tense.

How was the hanging carried out?

This is where different claims are coming forward. Government reports say that the execution took place in the presence of people, but some human rights groups say it was carried out behind closed doors. The clear picture is still blurry.

Is there controversy regarding the trial?

Most questions are being raised on this. Human rights organizations allege that the case was disposed of very quickly. He says that the accused did not get proper legal help and the entire process remained a formality.

Is the allegation of forced confession true?

Many organizations have claimed that statements were taken from the accused under pressure. Although these claims have not been independently verified, this issue has started being raised at the international level.

Could there be more executions?

This is the biggest concern. Reports indicate that many people linked to the recent protests are still in custody and some have even been sentenced. In such a situation, it is feared that more stringent steps may be taken in the future.

Has this happened before?

This incident is being compared to the hanging of wrestler Naved Afkari in 2020. Even then there was a lot of protest at the international level. Now once again the debate has intensified with the emergence of a name related to the game.

What is the world’s reaction?

This matter is being monitored at the international level. Many human rights organizations are continuously giving statements and demanding intervention from the governments.

What does this whole incident show?

One thing is clear that the situation in Iran is not going to calm down yet. The government is in a strict mood and on the other hand, the voice of protest has also not stopped completely. In such a situation, the coming days may bring more stress.
