Chandigarh: The Punjab government has implemented a new reward policy to curb crime and gangster networks. Along with this, a list of 28 most wanted accused have been released. The government claims that this step will increase participation of common people and help the police reach the criminals. Those giving information will be given a cash reward and their identity will be kept completely confidential.
What is the purpose of the new reward policy?
The government’s focus is clear—a direct attack on gangsters and organized crime. This policy has been implemented under the ‘Gangster Te War’ campaign so that common citizens can also stand against crime along with the police.
Are reward rights set at different levels?
In the new system, officers have been given the authority to sanction rewards at different levels. Up to SSP level, a reward of Rs 1 lakh can be given, while at IG and DIG level, a reward of up to Rs 1.5 lakh can be given. Sanctioning up to Rs 2 lakh will be done at the ADGP level and more than that will be approved at the DGP level.
Will there be a reward for all information?
The police has made it clear that the reward will be given only for concrete information proved to be correct in the investigation. You will not get any benefit if you give wrong or unconfirmed information.
Will the identity of the informer be completely protected?
The government has also made it clear that the identity of the person giving the information will be kept completely confidential. Its information will not be made public at any level so that people can come forward without fear.
Has any helpline been issued for the general public?
The police have also released an ‘Anti-Gangster Helpline’ number, where people can give information anonymously. The information received through this medium will be examined with priority.
What action has been taken so far under the campaign?
According to the police, thousands of locations across the state have been raided. A large number of people have been detained and many declared criminals have been arrested.
Will this be able to curb crime?
Officials believe that this policy will increase trust between the police and the public. If people start giving information openly, it can help in weakening the gangster network.
