Vrindavan: The busy street food market at Vrindavan’s Municipal Corporation crossing is set for a makeover, with the civic administration planning to establish designated food counters for small vendors. The initiative aims to provide street traders with organised spaces to run their businesses while reducing traffic congestion and improving the appearance of the area.

The crossing has gradually emerged as a popular destination for street food lovers. Every evening, the area attracts large crowds looking for snacks and other food items, providing a source of livelihood for numerous small traders. However, the unregulated placement of handcarts and temporary food stalls has frequently disrupted traffic movement, sometimes resulting in congestion. The scattered arrangements have also affected the overall appearance of the crossing.

A Dedicated Space for Street Food Vendors

To address these concerns, the Municipal Corporation has drawn up a plan to reorganise the area. The proposal was discussed during Municipal Commissioner Ojaswi Raj’s visit to Vrindavan.

Under the proposed plan, vacant land stretching from the Municipal Corporation crossing towards the police station and up to the area outside Shaheed Laxman Bhawan will be utilised. The site will be developed with an interlocking brick floor, while attractive metal counters will be installed for street food businesses.

All counters will follow a uniform colour scheme and design to give the entire stretch a consistent and organised appearance. The proposed arrangement is expected to transform the location into a designated street food zone.

How Will Small Traders Get Their Counters?

The civic administration is seeking cooperation and permission from the Shri Rangnath Temple Trust to implement the project. Officials have clarified that counter allocation will not be carried out arbitrarily. Instead, eligible small traders will be selected through a prescribed process to ensure a systematic distribution of the available spaces.

Focus on Livelihoods Alongside Encroachment Control

Municipal Commissioner Ojaswi Raj said the initiative is intended to achieve more than simply removing encroachments. The objective is also to provide small traders with dignified and organised opportunities to earn their livelihood.

According to the commissioner, designated counters will help keep roads free from unauthorised occupation while allowing visitors to enjoy food in a cleaner and better-maintained environment.

Once implemented, the project is expected to improve traffic movement, enhance the appearance of the Municipal Corporation crossing and provide small businesses with a more structured place to operate.
