New Delhi: A growing trend which is dubbed “sleep divorce” has been making the rounds, but what does the term actually mean? It may  sound strange but in reality it just means couples stop sleeping in the same bed for the sake of a happier relationship.

The term “sleep divorce” may sound dramatic but the practice is less about separation and more about preserving intimacy, reducing conflict and breaking the cycle of exhaustion that can quietly erode partnerships.

What is sleep divorce?

When a person hear the phrase “sleep divorce,” the images or thoughts of a wife banishing her husband to the couch after an argument might appear in mind.

But “Sleep divorce” simply means couples making the intentional choice to sleep apart for a healthier, happier relationship.

The couples choose to sleep in separate beds or even separate rooms, for individual comfort and needs.

The couples in US, usually practice this exercise due to common sleep disturbances such as snoring, irregular work shifts, or late-night screen use, issues that often spark friction between partners.

Many couples take sleep divorce as a flexible arrangement rather than a permanent separation, alternating between shared and separate sleeping spaces based on circumstances.
