New Delhi: Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh visited Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Tuesday to check on the health of activist Sonam Wangchuk. The visit came hours after Wangchuk was shifted there from Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital following an order by the Delhi High Court, according to reports.
Did the Union Ministers meet Sonam Wangchuk?
According to reports, Union Health Minister JP Nadda and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Jitendra Singh on Tuesday met Sonam Wangchuk at the Medanta hospital after he was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) under the supervision of Dr Sushila Kataria, who is an internal medicine specialist.
This is being considered a major initiative by the government to end the ongoing standoff in Delhi. Sonam Wangchuk is on an indefinite hunger strike over the issue of paper leaks in several exams, including NEET.
What did the Delhi High Court say?
On the orders of the Delhi High Court, Sonam Wangchuk was discharged from Safdarjung Hospital and admitted to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram for further treatment.
On Tuesday at around 7:30 pm, Sonam Wangchuk was brought to Medanta in an ambulance under tight security, and his treatment began under the care of a specialised medical team.
Why was Sonam hospitalised?
Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike since June 28 in support of the protests led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), demanding accountability in the education system. This includes the paper leaks of several exams, including the NEET, the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over exam irregularities, and the government’s accountability for student issues.
Sonam Wangchuk was previously admitted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, requested the court to transfer him to Medanta for treatment. During the hearing, the Delhi High Court ordered Sonam Wangchuk’s immediate transfer to Medanta Hospital. The court stated that his current health condition required constant monitoring by specialist doctors.
Doctors from AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital were also present during the hearing. Based on medical reports, they informed the court that Wangchuk had low potassium levels and there were concerns about the TLC test results.
