New Delhi: The decision of the brawl that took place on the field on the first day of the Colombo Test has now been decided. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando were given the same punishment by the ICC, both were deducted 25 per cent of their match fees and were also given one demerit point each. The whole story is of the 17th over.
What happened in the 17th over?
Fernando’s ball came in and straight uprooted Jaiswal’s stumps. Jaiswal was out after scoring 45 runs and walked away. But Fernando’s send-off stung him, Jaiswal turned, there was an altercation, and the next moment their heads collided. The matter got so bad that Sri Lankan captain Dhananjay de Silva himself had to intervene.
What was the basis of punishment?
Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, This rule deals with inappropriate physical contact between players. Both admitted their mistake and also accepted the punishment decided by match referee Andy Pycroft, so the matter did not come to a formal hearing. The special thing is that both of them did not have any disciplinary record in the last two years.
What explanation did Jaiswal give?
Even before the punishment, Jaiswal had expressed his views on the internet. On an Instagram post by Cricbuzz, where the question was asked whether Jaiswal crossed the limit, Jaiswal himself wrote the answer, Do not judge without knowing the whole story, and if anyone crosses the limit, Team India will not remain silent. Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak also admitted that the atmosphere was heated, although he also said that Jaiswal should not have gone so close.
