New Delhi: Jewelery brand GIVA has removed its Rakshabandhan advertisement featuring actress Kriti Sanon after the controversy. A section of social media had raised questions regarding Kriti’s attire in the advertisement. The actress had defended her clothes amid the controversy, while BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut also criticised the advertisement. A day later, GIVA decided to withdraw the advertisement from all media platforms.

What did the company say?

GIVA said in a statement released on its official Instagram account on Wednesday that it deeply respects Indian culture, traditions and festivals. According to the company, an attempt was made to spread the spirit of Rakshabandhan to pets also through the advertisement. The company said that its intention was not to hurt anyone’s sentiments.

What started the controversy?

In the advertisement, Kriti Sanon was seen in a bralette style blouse, cape and draped skirt while celebrating Rakshabandhan. Some people on social media raised objections about her attire in the advertisement related to the festival. Critics raised questions as to why such attire was used in an advertisement depicting a traditional festival like Rakshabandhan.

Has Kangana Ranaut also targeted her?

Amidst the controversy, Kangana Ranaut also commented on Kriti Sanon’s advertisement. He raised questions on Kriti’s outfit and asked why there was a need to tie Rakhi in such an outfit during Rakshabandhan. After Kangana’s comment, the debate regarding advertising intensified on social media.

How did Kriti Sanon respond to the criticism?

Kriti Sanon defended the ad and her outfit in a post on social media. He said that the culture and traditions of festivals should not be linked to a woman’s dress or her neckline. Kriti also emphasised that culture and traditions lie in the heart of a person.

What was the message regarding pet dog in the advertisement?

Kriti also defended the inclusion of the pet in the advertisement. He said that in many families, pet dogs are an integral part of the family. With this idea in mind, GIVA tried to include pets in the Rakshabandhan celebrations.

Why did GIVA remove advertising?

The company said that if its recent advertisement has inadvertently hurt the sentiments of any section of the society, it was not its intention to do so. In view of the controversy, the company withdrew the advertisement from all media platforms as a mark of respect. Along with this, GIVA wished people love and positivity on the occasion of the festival.
