India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has given an important update on his recovery ahead of the Asia Cup. The 34-year-old has spent the past five to six weeks at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, working on his recovery after surgery. He shared how a proper and planned routine helped him get back in shape just in time to lead India in the upcoming tournament.

Recovery after Surgery

Following the conclusion of IPL 2024 in June, Suryakumar had a successful sports hernia operation in Munich, Germany. Once he returned home, he continued his rehabilitation at the CoE. Talking about his progress, he said he was happy with how his body had responded. “I’m feeling good right now. “It has taken five to six weeks of consistent effort, and I’m feeling really positive now,” he mentioned in a BCCI video posted on X.

Injury Diagnosis and Treatment

Suryakumar explained that the injury was identified during the final stages of the IPL. Since he had suffered a similar problem last year, he quickly recognised the signs. I started feeling the problem near the end of the IPL, which led me to go for a scan, and the results confirmed it. After that, I travelled to Germany for the surgery. Since I was already aware of the recovery steps, I was mentally prepared for the process.” We took it one week at a time, and now I’m feeling strong again,” he added.

Role of the CoE Staff

The Indian captain acknowledged the support of the CoE trainers and physiotherapists for helping him recover. He said the team designed his rehab plan immediately and paid attention to how his body reacted. “They knew exactly how my body works. Every gym and ground session was planned instantly, and step by step, I was improving,” Suryakumar explained. He said the careful planning and steady progress helped him regain full fitness without rushing the process.

World-Class Facilities

Suryakumar highly appreciated the CoE, calling it one of the finest facilities he has come across. He mentioned that the gym is spacious enough to allow 30–35 players to train at once. He said he used nearly all the machines, noting that several of them are extremely helpful for athletes. Beyond rehabilitation, he added, any cricketer can visit to practice and train, as the centre offers around 60–70 wickets along with three full-sized grounds. “The facility is truly outstanding,” he remarked. Suryakumar will now return to competitive cricket in the Asia Cup, which begins on September 9. India will open their campaign a day later against the UAE.

India’s team for the Asia Cup includes: Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Jitesh Sharma, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Varun Chakaravarthy, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson, Harshit Rana, and Rinku Singh.
