Lucknow: The election schedule for 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh has been revealed. Voting on these seats will be held on October 16 and the results will also be declared after counting of votes on the same day in the evening. Elections for a Rajya Sabha seat in Uttarakhand will also be held on the same day. According to the EC’s schedule, nominations will start from September 29, while October 6 will be the last date for filing nominations. October 7 has been fixed for scrutiny of nomination papers and October 9 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations. Voting will take place from 9 am to 4 pm and counting will begin at 5 pm.
Which MPs’ tenure is ending on 10 seats of UP?
The tenure of 10 Rajya Sabha members from UP is going to end on 25 November 2026. These include BJP’s Brijlal, Seema Dwivedi, Neeraj Shekhar, Geeta alias Chandraprabha, Hardeep Singh Puri, Arun Singh, BL Verma and Dr. Dinesh Sharma. The tenure of Samajwadi Party’s Ram Gopal Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party’s Ramji Gautam will also end on this date.
What does the mathematics of UP say in the Rajya Sabha elections?
The current effective member strength of Uttar Pradesh Assembly is 397. According to the data of National e-Vidhan, BJP has 256 MLAs. Samajwadi Party has 101 MLAs. Apart from this, there are 13 MLAs from Apna Dal (Sonelal), 9 from Rashtriya Lok Dal, 6 from Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party and 5 from Nishad Party. Two Congress MLAs and two members of Jansatta Dal Loktantrik are also in the assembly.
In Rajya Sabha elections, MLAs vote for candidates on the basis of preference. In the current equation of 10 seats, about 37 first preference votes are required for a candidate to be elected. The final position in the election will depend on the number of candidates and votes of different parties.
What is the situation before BJP and SP?
If we look at the current assembly numbers, BJP is present as the largest party. By adding the number of its allies, the ruling party has the support of more than 289 MLAs. Whereas SP has 101 MLAs and Congress has two MLAs. Based on this number, both the major camps have enough votes to make their respective candidates victorious, but the competition for additional seats will become clear only after the candidates enter the fray.
Cross voting was also seen in UP in the last Rajya Sabha elections. Therefore, this time also the parties will be cautious about their MLAs. However, it is too early to say how many seats each party will get. The picture will be clearer after the names and nominations of the candidates.
What is the challenge before BSP?
The tenure of current BSP member Ramji Gautam in Rajya Sabha is about to end. At present there is no BSP MLA in the assembly. In such a situation, it will not be easy for the party to maintain its current representation in the Rajya Sabha. After the elections, there may be a situation of loss of BSP’s representation in Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh.
When will the election process be completed?
Nomination will start with the release of notification on September 29. Candidates will be able to file their forms till 6th October. The nomination papers will be scrutinised the next day and candidates can withdraw their names till October 9. After this, voting will take place on 16 October. Counting of votes will start shortly after the polling ends. In this way, the election process for these 11 Rajya Sabha seats of UP and Uttarakhand will be completed in October itself.
