New Delhi. After a long wait, border trade between India and China is going to start again. There is a plan to restart this trade from June 2026 through Lipulekh Pass in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. This road, which was closed for about six years, is now going to be opened again, which is expected to increase the activity in the border areas.

Why is this path important?

Lipulekh Pass is not just a trade route but has also been a communication route for years. From here Indian traders go to Taklakot in Tibet and transact goods there. For the local people, this is not only a business but also a source of livelihood.

Why was this business closed?

The situation suddenly changed after 2020. Due to the Corona epidemic and increased tension on the border, this trade was completely stopped. Since then this route has been closed and small traders have had to suffer direct losses.

What preparations are being made now?

After getting the green signal from the government, the local administration has started preparations. Like every year, this time too there is a plan to run the trading session between June and September. Efforts to create coordination from both sides have intensified.

What will change for traders?

The biggest relief is that business will start again. Those who were waiting for years will now get a chance again. This will also increase economic activities in the border villages.

Has anything special happened from China’s side also?

According to reports, shops have also been prepared for Indian traders in Taklakot area of Tibet. This will make it easier for them to do business and the problem of accommodation will also be reduced.

Does this show improvement in relationships?

The tension on the border has not completely ended, but this decision is definitely being considered a positive sign. Both countries want to maintain dialogue at least at the trade level.

What is expected next?

If this beginning goes well, then in the coming time, opening of other traditional routes may also be considered. At present, the focus is on this trading session starting in June.
