Chandigarh: In a major breakthrough regarding the grenade attack that took place on April 1 at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters in Sector 37, the police have arrested both of the prime accused. One of the accused threw the hand grenade, while the other filmed the entire attack.
The investigation has revealed that the threads of this conspiracy lead abroad—specifically to Portugal and Germany—from where handlers associated with Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI, were orchestrating this module. According to the police, the arrested prime accused have been identified as Amanpreet and Gurtej, both residents of Ratangarh village in Rupnagar district.
The police had already taken both individuals into custody earlier, but their arrests have only now been made public. Initial interrogation has revealed that both were directly involved in executing the attack: one threw the grenade, and the other recorded the incident and transmitted the footage to the handlers based abroad.
Five Accused Arrested Earlier
Prior to this, on Saturday, the police arrested five other accused individuals in connection with this case; they are being produced before a Duty Magistrate in Mohali today, Sunday. Among them are three accused from Nawanshahr, and one each from Sangrur and Shimla. All of them had provided weapons and logistical support for the attack.
The investigation has further revealed that the entire conspiracy behind this attack was hatched by ISI-linked handlers operating from abroad. Notably, this module also included a young man who had come to India from Portugal on vacation. Hailing from the Balachaur region of Nawanshahr, this youth played a pivotal role in facilitating the supply of explosive materials through a local network. Explosive Material Arrives in India from Portugal
According to sources, Jasvir Singh alias Jassi—a resident of the Mazari area near Bharapur who has previously lived in Germany and other European countries—sent explosive material to India through Charanjit Singh, who had arrived from Portugal. This material was subsequently forwarded through a shopkeeper in Mazari and was ultimately used in the attack on the BJP office.
Charanjit Singh (28), who was preparing to return to Portugal, was taken into custody on April 2 under suspicious circumstances by a team operating in plain clothes. While his family alleged that this amounted to an abduction, sources indicate that the operation was, in fact, carried out by intelligence agencies.
Attempt to Destabilize India
Investigating agencies believe that this attack is not merely an isolated act of terror, but rather part of a larger network that has been active in the Punjab-Chandigarh region since 2022. Employing constantly evolving strategies, foreign handlers are attempting to sow instability in India by utilizing local youths. Currently, teams from the police and counter-intelligence wings are working to unearth the entire network, and further major revelations regarding this case are expected in the coming days.
