Tehran: Amidst the war with America, Iran did such a thing that the whole world kept watching. In Tehran, the government got hundreds of couples married simultaneously. Don’t consider this a normal marriage. These marriages were of those people who had registered their names in the government’s “sacrifice” list. Meaning they said that they would even sacrifice their lives for the country. This entire spectacle took place in Imam Hussein Square of Tehran. Decorations, balloons, Maulana’s speech, everything was there. It was also shown live on government TV.

Was marriage made a symbolic message in the midst of war?

These marriage ceremonies held in Iran are not just being considered as social events but are being seen as a political and emotional message. According to reports several couples reached the venue in military vehicles. Machine guns were also installed on some vehicles. The stage was decorated with balloons and religious symbols, while the event was led by a religious leader. A large photograph of Iran’s new supreme leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei was also installed at the venue of the ceremony.

Is the government engaged in creating an atmosphere in support of war?

Iranian media claims that big leaders like Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and President Massoud Pejeshkian have also registered their names in support of the “self-sacrifice” plan. It is believed that the government is organizing such programs to keep public support strong amid the war. Several rallies and public events have been held in Iran over the past few weeks, appealing to people to support the government and military.

Has the ‘Sigeh’ tradition come into discussion again?

After these mass marriages, Iran’s “Sigeh” tradition has also come into discussion. In Shia tradition, there exists a system of Sigeh (temporary marriage), in which marriage can be done for a fixed period of time. This period can range from a few hours to several years. Experts say that in times of war and social tension, such traditions again become a subject of debate. However, it was not made clear whether the couples involved in these ceremonies were having a permanent marriage or were united under the Sigeh tradition.

Has the situation changed after the American attacks?

It is being told that after the attacks on Tehran by America and Israel in late February, the situation in Iran changed rapidly. Former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei was killed in these attacks, after which Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed the new Supreme Leader. Since then, Iran has been continuously adopting a tough stance against America and its allies.

Are common people also feeling the effects of war?

A new bride told the media there, “The country is fighting a war, it’s fine. But we are young, we have the right to get married and live life.” The government also wants to give the same message that do not be afraid, life will go on. But many countries of the world are calling it war propaganda. He says that Iran wants to show that its people are with it. Tension between Iran and America has increased significantly since the February attacks. Iran has made it clear that it will not bow down. This mass marriage also seems to be a part of the same stubbornness.
