Chandigarh: The Punjab State Election Commission has announced the dates for the general elections for the Municipal Councils of Dinanagar, Gurdaspur, Qadian, and Sham Chaurasi. According to the schedule released by the Commission, voting for these municipal councils will be held on June 13, 2026. The election notification was issued by the Local Government Department, Punjab, under Section 13A of the Punjab Municipal Act, 1911. According to the State Election Commission, the nomination process will begin on May 30, 2026. Candidates will submit their nomination papers to the office of the respective Returning Officer from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for counting. The last date for filing nominations is June 3, 2026. Subsequently, the nomination papers will be scrutinized on June 4, and candidates can withdraw their nominations and be counted until 3:00 p.m. on June 5.
Elections will be held until 4:00 p.m
The Commission stated that voting will be held on Saturday, June 13, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Counting will begin immediately after voting ends, and the election results are expected to be declared the same day. The State Election Commission has stated that all necessary administrative and security arrangements have been made to ensure a free, fair, and smooth conduct of the election process.
Security forces will be deployed in sensitive areas
Additional security forces will be deployed in sensitive areas, while extensive arrangements will also be made at polling stations. With the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct has come into effect immediately in the respective municipal council areas. According to the Commission, the code of conduct will remain in effect until the completion of the election process, and all political parties and voters will be required to follow its rules.
