Washington: Bad weather spoiled President Donald Trump’s preparations for the grand celebration organised on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. Due to the strong storm and bad weather that hit Washington, DC, on Saturday, the event going on at the National Mall had to be stopped midway, and the organisers instructed people to go to safe places.
Why did the storm spoil the program of the ceremony?
On the occasion of Independence Day, President Donald Trump had planned a big public meeting at the National Mall. But by evening, after warnings of strong winds, thunder and storms, the organisers decided to vacate the venue.
Danielle Alvarez, spokeswoman for the ‘Freedom 250’ campaign, appealed to people to seek shelter in nearby museums and government buildings. At the same time, the Washington Metro Administration also opened many underground stations as temporary shelters.
In which cities were the celebrations cancelled?
The impact of bad weather was not limited to Washington only. Independence Day events were cancelled in Hartford, Connecticut, and Harrisburg and Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
In Boston too, people were instructed to move to safe places for some time during fireworks and concerts, although the programmes were resumed when the weather became normal.
Where did the celebration continue?
Celebrations continued with full enthusiasm in cities like New York, Philadelphia and Houston. In New York, 43 giant ships passed by the Statue of Liberty and US Navy aircraft presented an air show. Fireworks and cultural programmes were organised around Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
What changed in Washington?
At around 7 pm in the National Mall, people were asked to vacate the venue through loudspeakers. The US Secret Service temporarily closed the entrance for security checks before Trump’s speech. Flypasts of military aircraft were also cancelled due to bad weather.
Did political messages also remain in discussion?
The ceremony was held at a time when the election atmosphere and political polarisation in America were at their peak. President Trump described communism as a major threat to American freedom in an event.
New York Mayor Zoharan Mamdani, without naming Trump, said that America’s democratic ideals are stronger than any authoritarian thinking, provided people come forward to maintain them.
On the other hand, Vice President JD Vance emphasised patriotism and American values from the USS Kearsarge ship present in New York Harbor.
Were world leaders also congratulated?
On the occasion of Independence Day, Trump also spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Both leaders wished America a happy 250th anniversary. Earlier, Britain’s King Charles III and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had also congratulated America.
Was there enthusiasm despite the weather?
Although many events had to be changed due to the storm, extreme heat, and security reasons, millions of people across the country celebrated America’s 250th independence anniversary with enthusiasm and patriotism. Fireworks, parades, cultural programmes, and a citizenship oath ceremony were the centre of attraction in the celebrations.
