Kolkata: The main accused in the rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in West Bengal’s Baruipur, identified as Prabash Mondal, was killed in a police encounter on Tuesday. According to police, the encounter occurred during a crime scene reconstruction after Mondal allegedly snatched a police officer’s firearm and opened fire. Police then retaliated, resulting in his death.

The Baruipur Superintendent of Police (SP) said, “Prabhas Mandal, the accused in the Baruipur rape and murder case, died in a police encounter. During the crime scene reconstruction, he snatched a weapon from the police and fired a round at them. In retaliation, the police fired a shot, which hit Prabhas. He was declared dead at the hospital.”
According to a statement issued by the West Bengal Police, at around 12:45 am on Tuesday, the investigating officer of case number 1350/26, registered at the Baruipur Police Station, left with his team and the accused, Prabhash Mandal. The police accompanied the accused to the crime scene in Suryapur, where it was recreated.
The accused, Prabash, snatched a policeman’s weapon and fired one round at the police team, attempting to flee. The accused was injured in the police’s retaliatory fire and was immediately rushed to Baruipur Hospital, where doctors on the scene declared him dead.

On July 5, the body of a 12-year-old girl was recovered from a pond in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district. According to family members, the victim was raped and then murdered in Baruipur. The Suvendu Adhikari government formed an SIT to investigate the case. The victim went missing at 6 pm on July 4, and her body was recovered from a pond in Baruipur the following day.
