Melbourne: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed with a Guard of Honour at Government House in Melbourne on Thursday. The ceremony took place at the official residence of Victoria Governor Margaret Gardner AC.

When did PM Modi arrive in Australia?

Following his visit to Indonesia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Australia on Wednesday, where he met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Thursday.
PM Modi participated in the India-Australia CEO Forum and Economic Roadmap Business reception, where he addressed top business leaders from both countries and shared India’s ambitious energy and infrastructure goals.

What did PM Modi say?


From this global platform, PM Modi extended an open invitation to Australia’s vast uranium reserves, advanced technology, and over $4 trillion in pension funds to directly participate in India’s development journey.

During the meeting, PM Modi said, “The world is currently navigating a period marked by uncertainty, supply chain disruptions, and an energy crisis. In such times, it is both natural and essential for India and Australia to move forward as natural and trusted partners. Over the past few years, we have built a robust framework for our future partnership, leveraging the strengths of both nations. The ECTA (Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement) agreement, concluded in record time in 2022, has further strengthened our economic ties; since its implementation, exports from India to Australia have doubled, and businesses in both countries have benefited from new market access…”

He noted that many clean energy companies are present here. We are building a manufacturing ecosystem for hydro projects, green hydrogen, solar modules, and wind turbines in India. India has set a target of achieving 500 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030 and reaching net zero emissions by 2070. Australia’s technology, capital and resources can accelerate this transformation… We have set a target of 100 gigawatts of nuclear energy capacity by 2047.

After the event, Australian PM Anthony Albanese took a selfie with PM Modi. The Prime Minister is on a three-nation tour from July 6 to 11. A meeting will be held between PM Modi and PM Albanese, during which a trade deal may be discussed. PM Modi will depart for New Zealand on July 11.
