Faridkot: Following the recent suicide of a student in Kahnuwan village (Gurdaspur district)—who took his own life after being distressed by a punishment received at school—a B.A. student from Sukhanwala village in Faridkot has committed suicide after posting a message on Instagram. He had been missing since April 25. In connection with this incident, the police have registered an FIR against the college’s library in-charge, accusing him of abetting the suicide. Gursewak Pal of Sukhanwala village stated in a complaint filed with the police that his 21-year-old son, Yogesh Sharma, was a first-year B.A. student at Guru Nanak Government College (Rode College), located in Guru Teg Bahadur Garh village, Moga.

On April 25, he left home for college at 7:30 AM. At approximately 10:30 AM, while at the college, Yogesh Sharma called his uncle to request a Google Pay transfer of ₹500 after the library in-charge, Hardeep Singh Brar, asked him to deposit a fee.

Subsequently, Yogesh called his home and explained that the aforementioned library in-charge was demanding the immediate return of a book he had borrowed from the library. He further stated that the in-charge was threatening to have his name struck off the college rolls if the book was not returned that very day.

Yogesh also mentioned that he had submitted an application to the Principal to obtain his roll number. Although the Principal had instructed the library in-charge to issue the roll number, the in-charge was refusing to do so despite these instructions. Yogesh had requested permission to return the book on Monday.

According to the FIR, Yogesh Sharma pleaded with the library in-charge to issue his roll number; however, the in-charge not only refused to provide it but also humiliated him over the return of the book. Furthermore, the in-charge allegedly told him that once his name was removed from this institution, no other college would grant him admission.

Following this, Yogesh Sharma posted a message on his Instagram account directed against the library in-charge, in which he wrote: “Ensure that the ‘fat sir’ from Rode College faces punishment. Miss you, family.” He subsequently committed suicide by jumping into a canal.
