Chandigarh: Amid the ongoing infighting within the Punjab Congress, a key political meeting is scheduled for Saturday. Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and leaders considered close to him are set to meet the party’s Punjab in-charge, Bhupesh Baghel. The discussions are expected to focus on issues such as the state leadership dispute, recent organisational appointments, and growing dissatisfaction among party workers.
Notably, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring will not be part of the meeting. The talks are being seen as a significant step towards addressing the differences and easing tensions within the state unit of the party.
Why was this meeting scheduled?
Dissatisfaction in the Punjab Congress came to the fore when the party high command decided to keep Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as the state president. After this, former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and their supporters raised questions on the organisational decisions. Angry leaders also distanced themselves from many meetings and indicated that the workers’ opinions were not given enough importance. This is why the party leadership has now started trying to end the deadlock through talks.
Which issues will the Channi camp raise?
According to sources, pro-Channi leaders say that it is necessary to take all the leaders along to strengthen the organisation before the assembly elections in Punjab. Issues like the functioning of the state unit, organisational decisions and the dissatisfaction of the workers can be raised prominently in the meeting. The Channi camp also wants that the opinion of senior leaders should be given more importance before taking decisions related to Punjab. However, at present no party has said anything publicly on what decision will be taken in the meeting.
Why is Raja Warring away from this meeting?
Even before the meeting, it was clear that Channi supporters want the talks to take place only in the presence of Bhupesh Baghel. For this reason, State President Raja Warring will not participate in this round of discussion. Warring has also publicly said that he has no objection to this arrangement and that all the party leaders will eventually contest the elections together. On the other hand, Bhupesh Baghel has already made it clear that the decision to change the state leadership is not an easy process and the final decision on this will be taken only by the party high command.
Will Congress be able to unite before the 2027 elections?
Keeping in view the next assembly elections in Punjab, Congress does not want to prolong the infighting at any cost. The party leadership believes that if the organisational dispute is not resolved in time, it may affect the election preparations. For this reason, talks have been going on continuously with different leaders for the last few days, and all parties are being given the opportunity to express their views.
What can come out of the meeting?
Political experts believe that there is little possibility of any major decision in Saturday’s meeting, but the beginning of the dialogue is considered important in itself. If an agreement is reached between the two parties, then the tension that has been going on in the Punjab Congress for the last few days may reduce. At the same time, if the differences persist, the party’s challenge may increase further in the coming days.
At present, everyone’s eyes are on the meeting between Bhupesh Baghel and Channi because this may indicate the future strategy of the Punjab Congress.
