New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has regularised 1,467 sanitation workers over the past two months, offering greater employment stability to staff responsible for maintaining the capital’s cleanliness. Mayor Pravesh Wahi has also announced plans to regularise around 400 more workers before Diwali, with a larger target of approximately 7,630 workers over the next three months.
Speaking at a press conference at the MCD headquarters on Monday, Wahi described sanitation workers as the backbone of Delhi’s cleanliness system and said recognising their contribution was a key responsibility of the civic body.
505 Workers Regularised in October
According to the mayor, the corporation regularised 505 sanitation workers in October from the 1998–2000 and 2000–2002 batches. The move is part of the MCD’s efforts to recognise the long service of employees who work under challenging conditions to maintain public hygiene.
The corporation has also made 542 appointments to daily-wage positions on compassionate grounds for dependants of deceased sanitation workers. Of these, 109 appointments were issued in October.
In another personnel-related decision, 111 Assistant Sanitary Inspectors were promoted to the post of Sanitary Inspector.
How Will the Next Phase Benefit Sanitation Workers?
Wahi announced that the MCD aims to regularise approximately 7,630 sanitation workers over the next three months. He said the initiative is intended to strengthen employees’ job security and provide greater stability for their families.
Regularisation can offer eligible workers more secure employment arrangements and improved access to applicable service benefits. The planned recruitment and regularisation measures are expected to extend these benefits to additional workers.
MCD Leadership Highlights Employee Welfare
The mayor said the civic body was working to protect employees’ rights and improve their welfare under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s leadership.
Deputy Mayor Dr Monica Pant, Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma, Leader of the House Jai Bhagwan Yadav and Environment Management Services Committee Chairperson Sandeep Kapoor attended the press conference.
The announcement places sanitation workers’ employment security at the centre of the MCD’s current welfare efforts, with further regularisation expected in the coming months
