New Delhi: A heated confrontation erupted during Thursday’s general meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), as Mayor Pravesh Wahi criticised Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors over disruptions during discussions on sanitation and air pollution. The mayor alleged that the uproar and damage to public property undermined the dignity of the House and announced that the matter had been referred to the disciplinary committee for action under the rules.

Wahi said a 30-minute discussion had been scheduled on issues directly affecting the health and well-being of Delhi residents. However, proceedings were disrupted by the commotion. He also alleged that an objectionable remark was directed at a woman councillor from the Congress party.

Why Did the Mayor Refer the Matter to the Disciplinary Committee?

The mayor accused AAP councillors of preventing meaningful discussion on civic issues that require urgent attention, particularly cleanliness and rising air pollution. He said disruptions in the House had affected its ability to address public concerns.

Wahi maintained that the alleged damage to public property and conduct during the meeting could not be ignored. By referring the matter to the disciplinary committee, he said, the corporation would pursue action against those found responsible in accordance with established rules.

2,500 Sanitation Workers Planned Ahead of Festive Season

Turning to civic services, Wahi announced plans to recruit 2,500 sanitation workers for a period of three months to strengthen cleanliness arrangements ahead of the upcoming festivals.

He also said each councillor would receive ₹25 lakh for development works in their respective wards, providing additional resources for local improvement projects.

The mayor further claimed that 1,500 sanitation workers had recently been regularised. According to him, their monthly salaries had increased from approximately ₹18,500 to as much as ₹50,000 following regularisation.

Yamuna Cleanup and Waste-to-Gas Project Highlighted

Wahi said Union Home Minister Amit Shah had approved projects worth ₹8,941 crore linked to the cleaning and rejuvenation of the Yamuna. He described the initiative as an important step towards addressing pollution and improving environmental conditions in the capital.

The mayor also referred to a proposal put forward by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to produce gas from 6,600 metric tonnes of cow dung, which he said had received approval from the House.

Wahi asserted that despite political disagreements and disruptions, the MCD remained committed to decisions concerning sanitation, environmental improvement and public welfare.
