Diplomacy between India and Russia intensifies; Jaishankar reaches Moscow

India Russia Relations: Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has arrived in Moscow on a three-day visit to Russia. The visit will last from 19 to 21 August 2025 and is considered very important in terms of strengthening India-Russia relations. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Jaishankar will meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov during this period. He will also co-chair the 26th meeting of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission (IRIGC-TEC) to be held on 20 August and will also address the India-Russia Business Forum.

The meeting will review the bilateral agenda

The main objective of this visit is to further strengthen the ‘special and privileged strategic partnership’ between India and Russia. The meeting will review the bilateral agenda, discuss trade and energy cooperation, and share India’s views on global issues. Jaishankar’s visit comes at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin recently spoke on the phone for the second time in 10 days. Putin briefed Modi about his meeting with US President Donald Trump and discussions on the Russia-Ukraine war.

Anger at this policy of India

India’s diplomatic initiative comes at a time when tensions have increased in its relations with the US. President Trump recently imposed a 25% tariff on India for buying oil from Russia. At the same time, US officials have also expressed displeasure over India’s policy. At the same time, amid China’s growing influence and pressure from the US, India considers Russia a reliable partner. For decades, Russia has been an important ally of India in defense and strategic matters.

Ajit Doval also reached Moscow

It is worth noting that a few days ago, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval also reached Moscow and met President Putin. It is believed that after this visit, there may be a direct meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Putin during the SCO summit to be held in Tianjin, China, later this month. Apart from this, the possibility of Putin’s visit to India by the end of the year is also being considered.

India-Russia relations, which have been going on for almost four decades, have become even more important amidst the ever-changing global equations. Jaishankar’s visit is an opportunity to give new dimensions to this relationship and further strengthen common interests.
