How did the Father’s Day celebration start?
Father’s Day originated in the United States in the 20th century. The movement was led by Sonora Smart Dodd. Sonora was raised by her father, who was a Civil War veteran, after her mother’s death, along with five siblings. Sonora was very devoted towards her father, so to honour him, she decided to campaign for a special day, dedicated to all the upper hand of every person’s life. Also, she was highly influenced by the growing popularity of Mother’s Day, so she wanted to advocate a similar day for her father.
When was the first Father’s Day celebrated?
The very first Father’s Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington, in 1910. Over time, the popularity of the day started emerging very fast. In 1972, the US President Richard Nixon officially signed it into law, declaring it a national holiday on the third Sunday of June. Now the day is well recognised and appreciated by fathers.
