Gambhir, Iyer To Face BCCI Review After India's Disappointing Performances

New Delhi: Team India’s struggles have continued after the series against Ireland, prompting concern over the side’s recent performances. Reacting to the disappointing run, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said a review meeting with captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir will be held after the conclusion of the T20 series against England.
India is currently touring the UK after successfully defending its T20 World Cup title. However, the team suffered a surprising defeat to Ireland before going on to lose the T20 series against England.

Why is the BCCI Concerned?

The Indian team is currently undergoing a transition phase. The BCCI removed Suryakumar Yadav from the captaincy due to his poor form and handed the reins to Shreyas Iyer. The squad also includes 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi this time around.
However, India’s performance has been disappointing so far. The team has failed to win a single match on the UK tour. While the Ireland tour was expected to be an easy affair, Team India suffered a 0-2 defeat. Meanwhile, they have already lost the series against England 0-3.

What did the BCCI say?

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia told the media, “We are very concerned about the Indian team’s performance. Once this series concludes, we will definitely conduct a review with the captain and coach to understand what is going wrong and rectify the issues quickly so we can regain our standing.”

The fifth T20 match between India and England is scheduled for Saturday, July 11. Team India will aim to win this match and salvage some pride. If England manages to defeat India in the 5th T20 as well, Team India will face a whitewash and lose the number-1 spot in the ICC T20 team rankings. Notably, India has held the top position in the ICC T20 team rankings for the past four years; consequently, this would be a major setback for the team.
