New Delhi: The decades-old defense partnership between India and Russia has now reached a new phase. Under an important agreement between the two countries, the way has now been opened for deployment of a limited number of troops, warships and military aircraft in each other’s territory. This arrangement has been implemented under the ‘Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Agreement’ (RELOS), which has become effective this year. This step is being considered strategically important amid increasing tension at the global level.
What is this new agreement?
The RELOS agreement between India and Russia allows both countries to use each other’s military bases. Under this, deployment of troops and military resources will be possible for a limited period.
How many deployments are allowed?
According to the agreement, both countries can deploy a maximum of 3000 soldiers, 10 military aircraft and 5 warships in each other’s territory at a time. This deployment will be based on fixed rules and consent.
Since when is this agreement in force?
The agreement was signed in February 2025 and became effective from January 12, 2026. Later Russia also gave it formal approval.
What will be its real benefit?
This arrangement will ease logistics cooperation between the two countries. Military exercises, training and disaster relief operations will accelerate. This will especially help in servicing the Russian equipment available with India.
What facilities will be available?
The host country will allow the other country’s military to use its airbases and ports. This will include facilities like fuel, repairs, food, water and technical support. However, many services will be provided on a payment basis.
How important is this strategically?
Experts believe that this agreement is not just military cooperation but also a sign of trust. This gives both countries access to each other’s strategic areas, which may come in handy in future operations.
Will this affect global politics?
Such an agreement is being considered important amid increasing tension in West Asia and changing global equations. However, what will be its direct impact will become clear only in the coming time. Overall, this step shows that even in times of global instability, strategic trust remains between some countries and they are trying to take cooperation to a new level.
