New Delhi: After nearly three weeks without a win, Team India will look to turn things around when they face Zimbabwe in Harare. Following six consecutive T20 defeats on their tours of Ireland and England, the visitors will be aiming not only to clinch the series but also to rebuild their confidence.
What about the captain?
Captain Shreyas Iyer and 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will be the main focus of the three-match T20 series, starting on Thursday. The match will begin at 4:30 pm IST.
This match is crucial for Shreyas Iyer. His team has lost six times in the first seven T20 Internationals since taking over as captain. Therefore, a win against Zimbabwe will be crucial for him.
On paper, India are strong contenders for this series, but current form has changed the equation. If the Indian team falters against a team like Zimbabwe, the dressing room atmosphere and the questions raised about the team management will intensify.
Who is the coach?
VVS Laxman has been sent with the team on this tour in place of head coach Gautam Gambhir. Laxman’s temperament is considered completely different from Gambhir’s. He believes in giving players clear roles rather than unnecessary experimentation. After a string of defeats, the team management’s top priority will be to return to winning ways.
What about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?
The biggest attraction of this series will once again be Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. With Sanju Samson out of the team, Vaibhav is likely to open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma.
Harare Sports Club has been a memorable ground for both players. Abhishek Sharma made his T20 International debut here and scored his first century in the very next match. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also captured the world’s attention with his century against England in the Under-19 World Cup final.
What about other players?
This series is a golden opportunity for young fast bowlers like Mayank Yadav, Prince Yadav, Ashok Sharma, and Yash Thakur. The team management is looking to develop a future fast bowling unit, so their performances will be closely monitored.
The Indian team certainly looks strong on paper, but recent performances have exacerbated its difficulties. Therefore, the first T20 match is considered not only the start of the series, but also a match that will determine the team’s confidence and future direction. A win will mark a new beginning, but a defeat could intensify the questions posed to the team management and players.
